Hammered brass wrapped around a wooden frame accented with ornate brass corners and central medallion, some patina has been left to the brass to add depth and character. This is an original Victorian cast iron fireplace. It's lozenge / patent mark dates it to 1849. The fireplace has been stripped of its paint back to the cast and finished in a traditional blacking paste.
